Veneer with Root Canal Doesn’t Match Other Veneers
Posted by Annmarie SanSevero
I wanted a smile makeover and had porcelain veneers made. The problem I have is there are a couple of teeth with root canals. Those are the teeth where the veneers don’t match. They have a grayish color to them. I talked to the dentist about it and he said that the teeth are much better, which is true. He feels I’m being overly critical and that most people would have been happy to have such an improved smile. While the smile is definitely an improvement, I was really hoping the teeth could match. Am I asking too much?

Dear Aisley,

First, you are not being overly critical to want your teeth to match from your smile makeover. That is a basic expectation. I’m curious as to weather or not your root canaled teeth had crowns on them. If they did, he would have to replace them with crowns, not porcelain veneers. Hopefully, he’s not trying to place porcelain veneers on top of crowns. First, it’s just as much work to redo the crown as it is to create the veneer. Second, there are greater risks. The porcelain won’t bond as well. You also have two pieces of dental work that can fail instead of one.
Given. your dentist’s attitude, I do not think he’s the best cosmetic dentist for you. I doubt you’re going to get the results you want from him. He has a family dentist mindset, where he knows best and function is more important than form. That is not the case with cosmetic dentists. What matters when it comes to a smile makeover is whether the patient likes the results. Though, come on… matching teeth is not a big ask.
While teeth with root canals do turn gray over time, there is a few ways to handle this. One is to start by cleaning up and whiten the underlying teeth that have the root canals. Then, they need to be bleached to even them out with the other teeth in color. Or, if those teeth had crowns, there would be enough tooth structure already removed for a decent ceramist to place a layer of opaquer first in order cover up the gray.
My suggestion is that you ask for a refund and have this done somewhere else. I would look for an AACD accredited dentist to do your work.
