Review of Tanda Pearl Ionic System
Posted by Annmarie SanSevero
I have TMJ disorder and have been trying to whiten my teeth. My dentist told me to wear the trays for a couple of hours a day. The problem I’m having is that wearing the trays that long irritates my TMJ pain. I read about this system called Tanda Pearl where the patients only have to wear the trays for 5 minutes at a time twice a day. They seem to have a few decent reviews, but there aren’t many reviews. What do you think of these? Would it be better for me? Is it safe?

Dear Caroline,
I’m glad you wrote. I looked this over, including the ingredients and the fine print. The whitening ingredient is similar to what a dentist would give just a lot weaker. While the product boasts no sensitivity, when you read the fine print it does say that there could be some sensitivity.
There is nothing magic about the five minute time span and no evidence that it penetrates your tooth any faster than other teeth whitening options. If you want to just wear your tray for five minutes at a time, I believe you would actually get superior results than you will with Tanda Pearl. The reason for that is the trays.
When you have professional teeth whitening trays they are fit to your particular bite. This has the benefit of keeping the teeth whitening gel on your teeth while simultaneously protecting your gums from leaking gel, as well as keeping your saliva from getting into the tray and diluting the strength.
The Tanda Pearl trays do not have this benefit. In fact, you’ve got the opposite issue to deal with. It will allow your teeth whitening gel to leak out, which would not only weaken its efficacy, but could cause irritation to your gums. It also will allow your saliva to get into your trays diluting it further. Additionally, because it is only one tray for both your upper and lower arch, it will aggravate your TMJ disorder significantly more than your current trays will. Even if it is only five minutes, you will have to bite down on the tray to keep it in.
I would stick with your current trays, but only wear them for the amount of time you can comfortably do so.
