Pain with Tooth Whitening

I’ve been whitening my teeth with a whitening product I got at Amazon, so it’s a total over the counter thing. A couple of days ago, I had this zing of pain. It didn’t last long but it was enough to stop me in my tracks. I stopped whitening for a couple of days. When I tried it again, the zing happened then, too. I think it’s hurting where I had some bonding done about seven years ago to repair a chipped tooth. Is the whitening damaging the bonding? If so, is there a way to get white teeth?

First, I’m sorry about the pain you’re experiencing. Teeth whitening will not weaken dental bonding, so that isn’t the problem. Even if the bonding had weakened, there wouldn’t be just pain. The bonded piece would fall off.
The type of pain you are experiencing sounds like you have a sensitive part of the tooth that has been exposed and when the whitening gel hits it, you get that painful zing.
It should be an easy fix. I recommend that you just go to see your dentist and let them know what is happening. He or she will look at your bonding. If it doesn’t need to be replaced because its lifespan is almost over, then all that will need to happen is for your dentist to cover the exposed part.
Don’t whiten your teeth until this is taken care of. There are accounts of people using over the counter whitening products, without the supervision of a dentist. who ended up needing a root canal treatment as a result.
One of the reasons it is important to be under the care of a dentist during a teeth whitening procedure is so they can keep an eye on these very things. They also check your teeth over to make sure there aren’t any loose fillings or problems with your gums before your start.
