Do I Need An Oral Surgeon For Bone Grafting?

Posted by Annmarie SanSevero

I’ve been without a couple of teeth for a while. I’m about to get dental implants for them, but knew I’d need to do some bone grafting in order to have enough bone for them. I assumed that would have to be done by an oral surgeon. But, my dentist said that he’s been doing bone grafting for about three years. Is it safe for me to do it with him or should I find someone else?

Louis

Dear Louis,

First let me compliment you on your choice of tooth replacement. Dental implants are the best tooth replacement option and the closest thing to having healthy, natural teeth again.

In answer to your question about the bone grafting. If your dentist has been doing grafting successfully for three years and has post-doctoral training in dental implants, than you are fine to let him go ahead and do that part of the procedure as well.  There are many dentists who also do oral surgery and do a fine job with it.

Some key post doctoral institution for this would be among the following:

  • International Congress of Oral Implantologists
  • Misch Implant Institute
  • American Academy of Implant Dentistry
  • Engel Institute
  • The Los Angelos Institute of Advanced Dental Studies

There are others, but these are some of the top options.

You did not say which teeth you are replacing, but if they are visible when you smile, you will also want to make sure that your dentist has some advanced cosmetic dentistry credentials, so that you can be certain you will get crowns that match the adjacent teeth. At the very least, they should be willing to place your crowns first with a temporary try in to make certain that they match your teeth and look natural to your complete satisfaction.
