Dentist Said He Can’t Give Me the Color I Want for My Crowns

Posted by Annmarie SanSevero

Years ago I had a smile makeover with eight dental crowns. I wanted a white smile but my dentist gave me what he said was more of a natural smile so that it “wouldn’t look fake.” I was annoyed at this because I felt like he didn’t follow my instructions. I’ve saved for years hoping to get the white smile I wanted. This  is a new dentist and I wanted to be very sure I could get what I wanted. I told him I want the whitest crowns possible. But, I also wanted to see the color first. He showed me what he called B1 and said that was the whitest shade he could give me because some of my crowns have a post. I don’t think B1 looks much whiter than my old crowns. Is this really the best I can do?

Dear Gemma,

The updated shade guide with whiter tooth shades.
A shade guid to help dentist choose the color of dental crowns.

I am so sorry that you have had two duds for dentists in a row. I am hoping that you had crowns before the first smile makeover or at least needed them. This is because the standard procedure for a smile makeover is to get porcelain veneers, not dental crowns. This prevents you from having to get healthy tooth structure ground down. Either way, you’re stuck with crowns now.

You can get much whiter crowns, as you can see from the shade guide above. I wouldn’t let this dentist do it though, even if you have the right shade color that you want. He’s not skilled enough in cosmetic dentistry to give you the result you are hoping for. I know this because he is mixing up  color and translucency. You don’t make a dental crown more translucent by making the color whiter. The post won’t show because the color is whiter.

My recommendation is to find an expert cosmetic dentist to do this for you. The best cosmetic dentists are AACD accredited. This certification means the dentist has proven skill and artistry and can give you the smile you deserved from the beginning.
