Is Premium Home Whitening a Good Product?

Posted by Annmarie SanSevero

I saw an advertisement for Premium Home Whitening and I wondered if you think it is a worthwhile product? I’d like to whiten my teeth and this looks significantly cheaper than what my dentist charges.

Dear Bud,

Teeth bleaching trays
Teeth Bleaching Trays

I’m happy to help with this. The good news is that their whitening ingredient of 35% carbamide peroxide is valid and will whiten your teeth. Their price is lower than what you’d get at the dentist. However, the trays they use make me wonder if you’ll actually save any money in the long run.

When you have professional teeth whitening done with a dentist, they can custom fit the trays to your teeth. This means the whitening gel stays on your teeth, without leaking out or anything else getting in.

Over-the-counter whitening kits cannot give you that custom fit tray. Instead, you’ll get something that fits but loosely. This weakens the gel in two ways. First, some of it leaks out. Second, your saliva can get into the tray weakening the strength of the gel even further. Additionally, you’d have to worry about the gel that leaks out causing problems for your gums.

It doesn’t happen often, but I read a case about a woman who ended up needing a root canal treatment from using Crest Whitestrips. She didn’t realize she had a vulnerable tooth and the whitening gel, tipped it over the edge. Had she been under the care of a dentist, that would have been addressed prior to the whitening, which would have protected her.

It will take quite a few kits for you to get the same level of results you would get through your dentist. By the time you added all of that up, I doubt you’d be saving much money.

I suggest talking to your dentist about the cost. He or she may be willing to come down a bit on price or allowing you to pay it out in installments so you can get your teeth whitened safer and more quickly.
